What is there to see in Ohio?
A whole lot of trees and water! We drove for six hours today. I knew we were near Lake Erie, but rarely saw it due to the thick greenery. I loved every minute of the drive.
Greater Cleveland Aquarium
This aquarium is quite a bit smaller than Chicago. We saw everything in about an hour, but I liked it so much more. They have the longest aquarium tunnel I’ve ever seen!
The place is well decorated, has a manta ray petting area, and wasn’t crowded at all. It is located in the basement of the historic FirstEnergy Powerhouse building. There is a huge parking lot that currently is free due to covid.
We actually loved this area. It’s so beautiful with lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River right there and so much green everywhere. Then we looked up the crime rate…
Squires Castle
This park has a huge open area with picnic tables and a castle like structure that was built in the 1980’s. This whole area is open to the public with a large parking lot right by the structure. There was a wedding taking place while we were there, so I’m guessing it’s available for lots of types of events.
Behind the structure, there are walking paths and horse trails. I thought about describing the directions for the trails, but they are all over the place. So we just used our maps.me and AllTrails to find our way around. All the trails are beautiful forested areas with ups and downs, perfect for a Sunday afternoon walk.
Kirtland Temple
The Kirtland Temple is owned by the Community of Christ. It’s closed for tours currently but the grounds remain open. We enjoyed walking around this historic structure.
There is an open Historic Kirtland Site. It’s across the street from the Temple and is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They offer a free tour of the Newel K Whitney Store, a mill, and a few other buildings. The tour and the movie at the visitor center were great.
We then drove three hours by Lake Erie, through parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, to get to our hotel near Niagra Falls!
