What is there to see in New Hampshire and Maine?
A whole lot of trees and water! I got to drive the majority of the day and could not get enough of the mountainous winding back roads. I really love these states…alot!
Lost River Gorge
We were amongst the first people here today. I’ve been in a lot of different caves throughout my life, but they’re usually formed by water carving them out. These are the first caves that I’ve been in that were formed by large falling rocks. This is a mile loop boardwalk trail with 1,000 steps and quite a few caves along the way. Most of the caves are quite short…but a few were a little longer and some we had to army crawl through. Beautiful beautiful views of the Gorge as your walking. This hike does require purchasing a ticket, and I would recommend getting one online before you arrive.
This is at the entrance of the ticket building and was cracking me up.
Franconia Notch State Park
There are so many hikes and walks and lakes here! I could have spent a whole week on this stretch of road.
We decided to go to Flume Gorge. You follow Interstate 93 North past Lincoln, New Hampshire. Once you’re in the Franconia Notch Parkway, take exit 34A towards the Flume Gorge. There is a massive parking lot here and this hike also requires a ticket to get in. The hike is about 2.5 miles round trip. The beginning and end are on dirt packed paths. The middle part of the hike is the gorge. This part is all boardwalk and has stairs. There is only one flow of traffic through the Gorge and this section is not too long, so try to make it count. Seeing the differences between these two gorges back to back was pretty cool!
It’s a four hour drive through the White Mountian National Forest and the rolling mountains of Maine before you get to Bangor Maine, where we’re spending the night. We drove three hours through this gorgeous country before finding a bigger town; sounds like my kind of state!
Timber Kitchen
This restaurant is in the Marriott Hotel in Bangor Maine and was the best meal of the trip so far. The bruschetta had a phenomenal combination of flavors. My samon was perfect with the lemon on it and the butternut soup was out of this world. My husband was blown away by the tenderness of his chicken. The peanut dessert was like a divine Reese’s. Everything was so wonderfully good and our waitress was the best!
We turned in early for the night to get some sleep to prepare for Acadia tomorrow!
